Legend in the making

France’s Laurence Abric has high hopes for her top stallion.

Laurence Abric’s passion for horses began with the purchase of her first mare in 1996. Seven years later, she bought an Appaloosa stallion named Legendary Eagle Rock by High Hand Rock, a son of Rock Star. “He began my love for the  breed,” Laurence says. “I was attracted to Appaloosas because of their history, color, conformation and character.”

She began participating in Appaloosa shows with the yearling stallion, and the duo’s success has continued today. Various accomplishments expanded Laurence’s interests to breeding and training, so in 2004 she started her search for the perfect mare.

She wound up purchasing Ms Rosary, a halter-bred mare, from California. Laurence bought three promising young fillies last year. A Dynamic Vision, previously owned by Marco Bertazzoni, and Eternal Dynamic—previously owned by Steve Cruse—are both by Dynamic Kid To A Te. Lewis and Marilyn Feuerstein of Three Creeks Ranch sold Laurence her hunter type mare Tizza Miss by Tiz Sly (JC) and out of Albia Miss.

Building her program

Legendary Eagle Rock helped Laurence start her breeding and training program by filling the stallion role. Marion Jung bred the 2002 stallion in Germany and his record reflects Laurence’s hard work. He has registers of merit in aged stallions and senior trail, with 44 lifetime points.

Laurence competed with him in halter, showmanship and hunter in hand. “Legendary Eagle Rock’s trainer, George Maschalani, has shown him successfully in western pleasure, western riding, trail and reining,” she says. The stallion claimed multiple European championships in those events.

She’s looking forward to promoting her own Legendary Eagle Rock 2009 foal and hoping for loud color babies for her clients. “Since I started only five years ago, I search for something unique,” Laurence says. One of her goals is to offer clients a horse with quality and history. Laurence researched the breed and spoke with many European and American Appaloosa breeders.

“I like to work with young horses, preparing them for halter,” Laurence says. “It’s always fun and interesting to find out how horses learn something.” She’s also begun to work with hunter horses and is preparing Tizza Miss for hunter under saddle and hunt seat equitation.

This year’s European Championship was held October 2–5 in Germany and gave Laurence the chance to see a lot of Appaloosas and meet other Europeans who love the breed. “I find that people who love Appaloosas are really special people,” Laurence says. The show gives Laurence the opportunity to promote the breed and share her enthusiasm for colorful horses.
