A tradition continued

The 2009 World Show celebrated its 48th year, and the following are excerpts from the coverage. Congratulations to all World exhibitors!
An evening of charity
Music, marines and Appaloosas brought World Show attendees together during the 2009 Toys for Tots benefit and freestyle reining evening on October 30. Back on its traditional Friday night, the performance raised $1,602 as well as numerous toys for Toys for Tots.
First to entertain were eight spunky ladies—pleasure trainers by occupation, rope race competitors on this particular evening—who were auctioned to the audience in a Calcutta event to raise money for the Appaloosa Youth Foundation (AYF).
Sarah Aron, Brittany Billows, Christy King, Linda Lee Long, Teresa Pennington, Nancy Sue Ryan, Tracy Reynolds and Darren Vincent borrowed games horses to compete in the rope race. It was quite a switch in class, but it made for an entertaining event as each lady encouraged her horse toward the line.
In the end, Tracy rode away with the win, with Shawn Reynolds the winning bidder. Though Shawn was entitled to half of the money raised, he graciously donated the full amount back to the AYF. In all, $2,650 was raised for the AYF, which gives scholarships to deserving, Appaloosa-involved youths.
Freestyle reining had eight entries and exhibited the creativity and imagination of each competitor. After each excellent entry performed, the class crowned two champions: Ima Frosty Lena with Teresa Pennington and Who Whuz It with Leslie Temple. Both ladies earned the same score, and after discussion and evaluating their horses’ condition, agreed to share the title.
Teresa rode Ima Frosty Lena to Linkin Park’s “New Divide,” with a Transformers theme borrowed from the recent “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Leslie rode Who Whuz It as the Grim Reaper, making the third consecutive appearance at the freestyle reining event.
Rounding out the class was Julie Jamieson with Tattoos Chex, performing as the Wicked Witch of the West; Drake Johnson reining EW Love Charm to Trace Adkin’s “I’m Gonna Marry for Money;” Crystal Gandrud dressed as Santa with Alto Pollito Lena; Leslie’s second entry, Hobbys Spotted Taps, who performed to Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face;” Karin Troendle and TS Ceo moved to “Gimme Some Lovin’;” and Ivan Gandrud rode Dream N Roxanne to a patriotic medley of songs.

Going once, going twice, sold!
Equine enthusiasts from around North America gathered Wednesday, October 28, 2009, in the James and Eunice West Sale Arena for the 2009 World Sale, featuring 98 well-bred Appaloosas up for auction.
Buyers looking to return to future World Shows had plenty of incentive to do so when considering the horses entered in the Yearling Incentive and Broodmare Incentive sales; horses in the Yearling Incentive are eligible to come back as 2 year olds to compete in World Sale incentive classes while foals of mares consigned in the Broodmare Incentive may also return as 2 year olds for World Sale classes. For the second year, buyers could participate via the Internet through Live Auction TV.
The evening’s high-selling horse was hip 79, Classical Pizzazz (Invest In My Pizzazz, AQHA x Unforgettable Dream), a 2008 stallion bred and consigned by Char-O-Lot Ranch of Myakka City, Florida, who sold for $13,500. He was also the highest-selling yearling in the Yearling Incentive Sale.
Highest-selling horse in the Broodmare Incentive Sale was hip 41, Obviously Approved (Obvious Oscar x Approvals Fancy), a 1997 mare consigned by Mary and Steven Willette of Waverly, Minnesota, and purchased for $3,500.
For the Select Sale, hip 98 Just Kryminal (One Hot Krymsun, AQHA x Bonita Pine) brought $5,500. The 2007 gelding was consigned by Winning Ways Ranch of Riverside, California.
