Magazine
Sixty-three years ago, Appaloosa Horse Club co-founder and Executive Secretary George Hatley began printing Appaloosa News, a single-page, mimeographed newsletter.
Appaloosa News grew throughout the 1950s to 64 pages, with a subscription rate of $2.50 per year. The November-December 1959 issue introduced a sepia-toned cover to the 7 x 10-inch publication; in January 1961 the magazine grew to the standard 8 x 11-inch page. In November 1961, the cover featured the magazine’s first 4-color image.
Appaloosa News became Appaloosa Journal in January 1987 under Editor Darrell Dodds. Since then, the magazine has been a full-color, full-sized publication serving the members of the Appaloosa Horse Club.
Appaloosa Journal’s web site was introduced in March 2001, announced with a foldout cover invitation on the March 2001 print publication. Appaloosa Journal Online allows members to interact with the magazine, see what’s in the current month issue, and find out what’s coming the following month. The site was re-designed in July 2009.
Appaloosa Journal has won many awards within the equine publishing world. Most recently, the magazine won five awards from American Horse Publications for material published in 2007:
- Second place, publication staff advertisement: “Breed of Choice: Fun to Own” designed by Holli Sampson, photo by Jim Bortvedt
- Second place, 1 or 2 page spread editorial design: “Pasture partners” designed by Evan Thompson
- Third place, service to the reader: “Spotted in the gate” by Tafra Donberger
