J&B Big Red got comfortable in first place. The 1973 chestnut stallion began his successful career as a competitive Appaloosa on the track and later collected championships in the halter pen. He passed on his versatile talent and winning ways to his get, producing medallion winners in racing, performance and halter. Bred by William Robinson of Pleasant Grove, Utah, J&B Big Red is by Big Red Bar (JC) and out of Miss Gold Bar.
The colt started on the track as a 2-year-old in 1975 and finished his career with a 13-6-3-1 record, a bronze medallion and $9,558.57 in earnings. His wins on the track include the Wild Hope Futurity, the Golden Spike Futurity, the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Stake and the Utah-Idaho Stake. In 1976 J&B Big Red claimed the racehorse of the year title. Adrian and Kathryne Sampeck purchased the stallion in 1979. The same year, J&B Big Red made his halter debut. He continued in the show ring until the 1980 season, earning 23 points and a register of merit.
The stallion produced a versatile crop of 88 foals. The offspring, like their sire, excelled in the ring and on the track. Eleven made starts and two became winners. They collected a total of $25,268.93. The stallion Roy L Duke, J&B Big Reds most successful race starter, earned a 19-9-3-1 record and $23,682.52 and went on to sire performance and race Appaloosas.
Nineteen of J&B Big Reds foals earned a combined 666 performance points. Fifteen became halter point earners, collecting 204.5. His get claimed seven bronze medallions. Twelve earned a total 22 registers of merit, two became club champions and one collected a superior achievement certificate.
J&B Big Red produced his last foal crop in 1996. He currently resides at Caines Show Horses in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, where he helps raise the farms weanlings.
