Starza’s Pine

Starza’s Pine

Starza’s Pine lived with one owner for 17 years and earned the devotion of her other owners as a great producing broodmare. Anna and C.E. Newman of Sarasota, Florida, purchased the 1969 filly as a 2-year-old from breeder Ben Riecken of Fremont, Nebraska, in 1971. Starza’s Pine, by Poco Pine (AQHA) grandson Pine’s Webb (AQHA) and out of Red Eagle’s Peacock granddaughter Sheza Star, caught Anna and C.E.’s eyes because of her impeccable conformation and swanlike neck.

After C.E.’s death in 1978, Anna reduced their herd from 30 horses to just one — Starza’s Pine. Starza’s Pine had carried Anna and C.E.’s son through youth classes under the guidance of Hall of Fame trainer Jack Hennig, so the mare held a sentimental spot in Anna’s heart. In 1988, Anna finally decided to part with the mare, and Starza’s Pine later ended up under the ownership of Earl Burchett of Social Circle, Georgia, and Crown Center Farm’s Bill and Nancy Laurie of Columbia, Missouri.

The mare produced 14 foals during her lifetime, including 10 fillies and four colts. Her foals have collected 774 performance points, 427 halter points, one halter superior event title, four performance superior event titles, one Club championship title and two versatility championship titles. Nine of her foals earned a total of 23 registers of merit.

They also earned 12 bronze medallions and one superior achievement certificate. Starza’s Pine’s last foal, Starza’s Andrew (by Impressive Andrew), has collected the most points, with 310.5 in performance and 211.5 in halter. She Is A Riker (by East Er Riker) comes in second with three halter points and 245 performance points.

Starza’s Pine died of natural causes at age 26.
