War Don

War Don

It's Golden Girl pedigree

War Don was born to run. The colt’s breeder, Glade Draper of Santoquin, Utah, started the mare Dawndee on the track as a 2-year-old, but without much luck. He decided to breed the mare to War Glory (AQHA), then put the pregnant mare back in race training. She became the first AAA-rated Appaloosa mare. War Don became her biggest winner on the track.

After foaling War Don on April 9, 1962, Dawndee continued racing while her suckling waited in the barn. Entered in yearling halter at the 1963 World Show by owner C.T. Hall of Loveland, Colorado, War Don placed third.

War Don collected a 16-10-1-1 record with earnings of $8,515.44. He won the I.O.N Futurity in Boise and came in third for the World Wide Futurity his first year on the track in 1964. He won the Autumn Handicap in Littleton, Colorado, in 1965, then placed in the same race the next year.

He sired 97 foals, including 27 starters and 13 winners, six stakes winners and eight stakes placed. His offspring collected a total $60,340.16, three bronze medallions and two championships. Comanche Warbonnet, out of Free Artist (JC) leads War Don’s money earners with a total $22,965.85. The colt, born in 1970, won the 1973 3-year-old sprint colt and 1974 4-years-and-older titles. Mr. War Jet, born in 1971 out of Miss Jet Van (AQHA) won $15,190.71.

A colt by War Don named War Venture became the stallion’s only performance point earner. War Venture, out of Amber Fire (AQHA) holds points in heading and heeling and a register of merit in timed calf roping. He placed sixth out of 36 in timed calf roping at the 1982 World Show.

War Don entered the Appaloosa Racing Hall of Fame in 1988.
